Game Recap: Softball |

Thrilling Friday in Florida Leads to Victory for Softball in One of Two Games

Goldey-Beacom survived a wild finish Friday afternoon in a 5-4 victory over Cedarville before dropping a 3-1 contest that night to Columbus State in Melbourne, FL.

Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) got GBC on the board against Cedarville with an RBI double, plating fellow senior Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) for a 1-0 lead.  But the Yellow Jackets responded in the third when Camryn Taktak lined a two-out, two-run single.

It stayed that way until the last of the fourth, when the Lightning plated four runs for a 5-2 cushion.  Seniors Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) and Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) scored on an error, sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) lined an RBI single and junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) added her own run-scoring single.

It stayed that way until the enthralling seventh.  Stephanie Stubblefield reached on an error and Dana Croyts walked to bring Caitlyn Colley up as the tying run.  She lined one to right field that got both runners home on what would be a triple.  But in trying for an inside-the-park homer and a tie, she was thrown out at the plate in a play that went from Snover in right, to Simpson at second, to senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) at pitcher and junior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) at catcher.

Burch (7-1) again shined in the circle, striking out six over seven innings.  She has won her last three decisions after getting a victory in her first four, recording 30 strikeouts and just seven walks over 43 2/3 innings.

Bohmann ended 3-for-3 for her fourth multi-hit contest of the season with Lowry and Frank getting two hits apiece for the Lightning.

The nightcap against the Cougars (16-5) started great with the Lightning (10-3) on top, 1-0, in the first.  Mirenda had a leadoff double, was sacrificed to third by Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) and scored on a wild pitch.

Columbus State got that back in the last of the second when Izzy Ripatti lined an RBI single to plate Brooke Thompson.  The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the fifth on Anna Waites' two-run single for a 3-1 margin.

Insinga went 3-for-3 with Mirenda notching two hits for the Lightning.

Columbus State last season won the Peach Belt Conference and competed in the NCAA Tournament.

GBC on Sunday is back in action against Thomas More at 10:00 am and Ursuline at 12:15 pm.
