Goldey-Beacom softball swept non-conference opponent Bowie State at the Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, DE. Game one saw a final score of 7-2 and game two ended 3-1.
In game one, both teams started their scoring early, with Bowie State taking a 1-0 in the top of first inning off of a single from Taylor Dawkins that sent Presleigh Braxton home. The Lightning came out swinging in their first at-bats, with freshman Bri Cole (Rising Sun, MD) singling to left field to score two runners. Senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, N.J.) then doubled to left field to run in two more runners for a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
The second inning saw senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) double to center field to score another two runs before doubling again in the fourth inning to bat in the seventh run for Goldey-Beacom. Bowie State scored their second run in the seventh inning on a single from Presleigh Braxton.
Senior Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) improved to 7-0 on the season from the mound and finished the game with six strikeouts.
Game two saw all three runs scored by the Lightning come in the first inning, with impressive defensive play and fielding that allowed GBC to hold the lead en route to victory.
The first run was by sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA), who scored off a sacrifice bunt from Bohmann, who advanced on a fielder's choice wgen Frank outran the throw. Lowry then doubled to left field to bat in two more runners. Bowie State scored in the fifth inning on a double from Dawkins, before narrowly getting stopped on a double play by freshman Josalyn McMillan in the seventh inning to end the game.
Senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, Md.) finished with nine strikeouts and brought her record on the mound to an impressive 11-3.Â
Goldey-Beacom plays next on Wednesday, when it faces Chestnut Hill in a doubleheader at 2:00pm at the Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, DE.
