Softball Drops Two at Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom Softball faced a talented Wilmington (DE) in a doubleheader in CACC action, but came up short, dropping both games.

Game one saw the Lightning narrowly miss the incredible comeback in the seventh inning, ending the game with a 14-13 loss. 


Senior Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, Md.) opened the scoring in the first inning after hitting a single to right field to give sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, Pa) the opening run. Wilmington (DE) scored their first run in the bottom of the second off a single from Eve Serrato. 


Wilmington added four more runs in the fourth inning from a single by Bella Barnes, a single from Gracie Mabrey to add two runs, and a sacrifice fly from Serrato. GBC took the lead in the fifth inning off a single from senior Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA), a double from senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) that sent two runners home, and sacrifice bunts from senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) and junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD).


In the bottom of the fifth, Wilmington received a double from Cassidy Zelano, a single from Emma Zimmerman and Bella Barnes, and an RBI from Serrato, giving the Wildcats an 11-7 lead going into the sixth inning. The Lightning added two more runs off singles from Radcliffe and Lowry. Zelano and Maddie Vollmar both hit doubles in the bottom of the sixth, adding three runs before the final inning.


Goldey-Beacom went down swinging in the top of the seventh after Frank singled to advance Josalyn McMillan (Rising Sun, MD) home, Mirenda singled to send Emma Friel (Coatesville, Pa.) home, Bohmann reached first on an error and advanced Frank, and Davi Jimenez (Vineland, NJ) drove home Mirenda before the Wildcats came up with the third out en route to their 14-13 victory.


Game two saw less hitting action from both sides, with Wilmington taking the 8-2 win.


Wilmington opened the first inning with two runs off sacrifice bunts by Haley Grygo and Bella Barnes. Delani Sheehan hit a home run in the second inning, Gracie Mabrey added an RBI in the third inning, and Sydney Hatch homered in the fourth inning to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.


The Lightning scored in the fifth inning off a double from Frank to advance Friel home.  For Wilmington, Maddie Vollmar scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning and Mabrey and Sheehan advanced home off a double from Hatch. Junior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, N.J.) added her first home run of the season to give GBC its second run.


Goldey-Beacom plays on the road again on Saturday in Bloomfield, NJ, where they face Bloomfield in a noon doubleheader.
