Softball Splits With Caldwell to Open CACC Play

Goldey-Beacom in game one of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader rolled to an 8-0 victory over Caldwell before it was dealt a 2-1 loss at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom (15-6, 1-1 CACC) in the opener got all the runs it would need in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  Junior Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) continued her amazing start with an RBI double and senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) added a run-scoring groundout.

The Lightning really put a dent in the scoreboard with five in the second for a 7-0 cushion, aided by a three-run triple from senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK).

GBC then ended things in the fifth via the run rule.  Junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) had a leadoff triple and senior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) dropped a bunt double with pinch-runner junior Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) staying on third.  Sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt that scored Johnson for the win.

Mechanicsville, MD senior Caitlyn Burch (9-1) again was outstanding, striking out nine in getting breached for just one hit and one walk.

The Cougars (1-10, 1-1) got their first run of the day in the opening frame of game two.  Grace Vondracek led off with a single, stole second and scored on Brooke Martin's double down the right-field line.

The margin became 2-0 in the fifth.  Sam DiDonna had a leadoff double, reached third on Emily Tavaska's groundout and crossed home on an error.

Bohmann halved the deficit in the sixth, crushing a no-doubt home run to left-center field for her first long ball of the season.  It also was her ninth career homer, tying her with GBC Athletics Hall-of-Famer Kendra Russell (2005-08) for third in program history.

Burch did everything she could out of the bullpen, striking out eight over three innings.  She now is at 76 strikeouts on the year, moving her into 10th on the school's single-season list.

Simpson amassed two hits, moving within one of becoming the 32nd in team history to reach 100 career.

McKenzie Nazionale rapped two hits and Katie O'Connor struck out three over seven innings for the Cougars.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Wilmington for a 2:30 pm doubleheader in New Castle.
