Game Recap: Softball |

Caitlyn Burch Again Dominates for Softball in Florida

Goldey-Beacom saw senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) strike out 16 against Gannon in a 3-2, eight-inning victory before the squad rolled to a 9-3 triumph over New Haven in Melbourne, FL.

Burch (8-1) once again was on point in the circle, taking a perfect game into the fourth inning and allowing just two runs and six hits over eight innings.  She recently surpassed 500 career strikeouts and now 52 in her debut season for the Lightning.

In her last five appearances, Burch is 4-0 with a save.  This came after she got the victory in each of her first four appearances.

GBC took a 1-0 lead in the second when Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor, City, NJ) scored on an error off a grounder from fellow junior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA).  Natalia Mallozzi lined an RBI double in the fourth for Gannon (8-5) to level things and Lindsay Breuer added a run-scoring fielder's choice for a 2-1 margin.

Goldey-Beacom tied things in the last of the fourth.  Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) doubled, reached third on a sacrifice from fellow senior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) and scored on a single from sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA).

Burch faced some trouble in the eighth, when Gannon loaded the bases with none out.  However, she got out of it when Jenna Clontz grounded into a fielder's choice and Abbey Girman hit a grounder to shortstop.

The last of the frame meant winning time for the Lightning.  Sophomore Chaneyl Johnson (Egg Harbor City, MD) was placed on second per international rules and took third on a sacrifice from Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ).  Two batters later, Friel got Johnson home with an RBI single and the squad moved to 4-0 in extra-inning games this season.

Radcliffe went 3-for-3 for the Lightning (14-3).

The nightcap did not require an oxygen tank.  GBC plated six runs in the second for a 6-3 lead, helped by a two-run double from Bri Cole (Rising Sun, MD) and an RBI groundout from fellow freshman Josalyn McMillan (Rising Sun, MD).

Cole had three hits and four RBI, Lowry ended 3-for-3 with Radcliffe and senior Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) getting two hits apiece.

Clayton, DE senior Morgan McLane (3-0) again got it done in the circle, striking out five over 5 1/3 innings.  Her 213 career strikeouts places her fourth in team annals and her 25 wins has her sixth.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday faces West Chester at 11:15 am and Ferris State at 2:30 pm.
