Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 87-84 Loss by Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom got one final test before it ends the regular season, but was dealt an 87-84 loss by regionally ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

A battle between two teams who will play beyond Saturday's regular-season finale was no more than a two-possession contest throughout.

Troy'reon Ramos canned two free throws with 2:55 remaining for an 81-77 STAC lead.  But junior Justin Allen (Boca Raton, FL), who tonight got his fourth start of the season, drilled a 3-pointer with 2:23 left for a one-point game.

Shaun Arnold canned two from the stripe with 2:04 to play for an 83-80 game, but junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) only could hit once from the line with 93 seconds left for a two-point contest.

Luis Risquez immediately was fouled and gave the Spartans a four-point cushion, hitting two free throws with 1:31 left to make it 85-81.  Marsh missed a 3-pointer on the other end, but freshman Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) came up with a steal the Lightning had life with less than a minute to go.

Freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) made good on that, nailing a 3-pointer with 23 seconds to go for an 85-84 game.  Deshawne Crim hit two free throws with 15 seconds left, but Powell missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Powell scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting with five 3-pointers, Akande netted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds, sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) netted 12 points with junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) adding 10 for the Lightning (11-16).

Goldey-Beacom held Saint Thomas Aquinas to just 37 percent shooting (11-of-30) in the second half and the visitors did not hit a field goal in the last five minutes.

Derrick James poured in 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting, Crim scored 18, Ramos netted 13 with Arnold adding 12 and 15 rebounds for the Spartans (21-8), who are fourth in the latest D2CSC East Region Poll.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday ends the regular season with a 6:00 pm contest at Wilmington (DE) in Newark, DE.
