Softball Rallies For Twin-Bill Sweep of Lock Haven

Goldey-Beacom notched a 3-2 victory in its opener against Lock Haven and then unbelievably rallied from three runs down for its third extra-inning victory of the young season, 5-4 in eight innings at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in game one struck first in the last of the first inning.  Senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) lined a two-out single up the middle and junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) followed with a triple inside the right-field line.

The margin doubled to 2-0 in the second.  Junior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) had a leadoff single, sophomore pinch-runner Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) stole second, took third on a single from senior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) and scored on a bunt single from junior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA).

The Bald Eagles got things level, 2-2, in the top of the fourth.  Bella Schmitt was hit by a pitch to lead off, took third when Maci Brodzina followed with a double and both scored on Abby Robertson's double.

But the Lightning took the lead for good in the last of the fourth.  Sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) was hit by a pitch and was erased on a fielder's choice from senior Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA).  Junior Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) and Bohmann singled to load the bases before Simpson drove home Mirenda with a single up the middle.

It was enough for senior Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD), who tossed four innings with three strikeouts for the win.  Junior Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) struck out two over three innings for her third career save, tied for the third most in the program's history since 2008.

Down 3-0 entering the sixth of game two, the Lightning rallied to tie things.  Senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ), the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, got an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game.  Friel added her own run-scoring single and Frank followed with a sacrifice fly to level things.

The Bald Eagles (2-4) in the eighth grabbed a 4-3 lead.  Hailey Irwin was placed on second via international tiebreaker rule, took third on a sacrifice from Schmitt and scored on Madison Melius' single.

GBC then had its turn in the eighth.  Freshman Chaneyl Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) was placed on second, reached third on Snover's groundout, Friel was hit by a pitch and then stole second.

After Frank was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mirenda lifted a sacrifice fly to tie things.  No at-bat was needed after that as a wild pitch was uncorked, plating Friel to continue the best start for Goldey-Beacom (6-0) at least since 2008.

Mechanicsville, MD senior and reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week Caitlyn Burch (4-0) did it again, striking out five over 5 2/3 relief innings for another win.  Friel and Insinga had two hits apiece for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom on Friday hosts West Chester for one game at 2:00 pm.
