Goldey-Beacom softball showed impressive play in a sweep, 1-0 and 5-4, over Bloomsburg at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.
Senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, Md.) had an unstoppable game on the mound, having five strikeouts and only allowing three hits in a complete game.Â
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning after senior Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) made her way on the bases with a triple and then fellow senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) led her home with an RBI.
Mirenda and senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, N.J.) both notched two hits, with junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) and Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) each adding one apiece.Â
Game two saw more action from both sides as Bloomsburg opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning with back-to-back doubles from Taylor Kranzley and Emma Little driving home Sarah Yamrick and Kranzley. Bloomsburg added two more runs in the fourth inning Bella Culp singled up the middle with bases loaded to send Josie Straigis and Taylor Welsh home.
The Lightning evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a huge triple from Mirenda that would send Insinga and pinch runner Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) home. Bohmann had a double that would give Mirenda the go ahead for home plate and Simpson hit a single to right field to send Bohmann home for the tying run.
Going into the eighth inning, Goldey-Beacom held off Bloomsburg defensively and Lowry had the walk-off single to send Insinga home for the winning run in the 5-4 victory.
Insinga had three hits, Lowry and Bohmann each had two hits and an RBI, junior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and senior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) both had two hits and Mirenda added two hits and two RBI.
Yamrick and Culp each had two hits for Bloomsburg, with Yamrick also adding two RBI.
This is the first known time softball has begun its season 4-0 at least since 2008 as no season-by-season records exist before then.
Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday plays a doubleheader vs. Lock Haven at 1:00 pm at the Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, DE.
