Goldey-Beacom women's basketball picked up a huge 71-68 victory over 20th-ranked and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponent Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
On the 45th anniversary of the United States hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union, Goldey-Beacom (9-18, 6-9 CACC) recorded a miracle of its own and put itself in prime position to make the CACC Tournament. GBC only needs to defeat Wilmington next Saturday to clinch the fourth and final spot from the CACC South Division.
The Lightning jumped to an early lead in the first quarter but Holy Family was able to claw its way back in, cutting the lead to only three heading into halftime. The second half of play saw strong efforts from both sides, but Goldey-Beacom was able to outlast a last second 3-point attempt from Holy Family enroute to a win was key in keeping hopes alive for a postseason appearance for the second straight season.
Senior Day for the Lightning saw impressive play from the team's seniors as Goldey-Beacom was led by senior Julie Kulesza (Wilmington, DE), who had an incredible game, leading all scorers with 30 points, five rebounds and three assists. This was only one point off from her career-high of 31 points in which she scored earlier in the season. Fellow senior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) added 12 points and junior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) netted nine points and five rebounds.
Holy Family (21-5, 13-2) was led by Kaelah Carter with 16 points, Carolyn Prevost with 15 points, and Jessica Riepe with 14 points.
Goldey-Beacom plays its final regular season contest against hometown rival Wilmington (DE) on Saturday at 4:00 pm in Newark, DE.
