Goldey-Beacom looked to make a late rally, but was dealt a 77-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss by Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
Down 21 points early in the second half and down 71-57 with five minutes left, Goldey-Beacom made a game of it. The home side continued its strong offensive play by using a 15-2 run in closing to 73-69 with 1:18 left.
Sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) continued his all-conference-type play, netting eight points in the run that lasted 4 1/2 minutes.
But the Tigers came through on the foul line. Ryan Holmes knocked down two with 70 seconds to play for a 75-69 game and Omarion Jett followed suit with 13 seconds left for the final.
McQueen again was on fire, scoring 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers. He now is at 88 three-pointers, just 12 off the program's single-season record set three years ago by Nazim Derry. It also is the eighth time this season McQueen has poured in at least 20 points.
Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) had 15 points and nine rebounds, fellow junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) had 15 and five with freshman Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) getting nine and eight for the Lightning.
Jett netted 21 points with CJ Mundell adding 16 for the Tigers (7-20, 1-14 CACC).
Goldey-Beacom (11-15, 8-7 CACC) got a break with Chestnut Hill (8-7) losing today at Wilmington to go into a second-place tie in the CACC South Division. Jefferson (9-6) upended Georgian Court and is in first place.
The top two teams in each of the two divisions gets a home game Tuesday, March 4 in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals.
Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday steps out of league play to host Saint Thomas Aquinas, beginning at 6:00 pm.
