Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lydia Betz’ Layup With 14 Seconds To Go Lifts Women’s Basketball to Heartstopping 78-77 Overtime Win at Georgian Court

Freshman Lydia Betz (Pittsburgh, PA) hit the go-ahead layup with 14 seconds left in overtime and then came up with a massive rebound in the closing seconds, helping Goldey-Beacom to a 78-77 triumph at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom came out smoking to the tune of an 18-4 lead in the first six minutes, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and forcing Georgian Court into seven turnovers.  Junior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) netted seven points in that span with senior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) adding six.

But the Lions ended the half on a 31-13 run, going 12-of-20 from the field for a 35-31 halftime lead.  Imani Gillette scored all 15 of her points in the half in that time, going 6-of-6 from the floor.

McCarron ended the half with 12 points.

A back-and-forth second half saw sophomore Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA) drive toward the goal and convert an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:26 left, giving GBC a 64-63 lead.

Senior Julie Kulesza (Wilmington, DE) hit twice from the line for a 66-63 Lightning cushion with 45 seconds left.  After Maria Stanescu missed a 3-pointer for the Lions, Kulesza hit twice more from the stripe with 24 seconds remaining for a 67-63 margin.

Julie Whesper kept Georgian Court in the game, the first time, by hitting a driving layup with 9.5 seconds to play for a 67-65 contest.  Yoder canned one from the line with 7.7 seconds remaining in bringing GBC to a three-point lead.

Georgian Court had no timeouts left and had to go the full 94 feet.  Whesper got the ball and came through again, banking home a 3-pointer as time expired for a 68-68 deadlock.

The overtime saw plenty of drama, especially with Stanescu hitting a 3-pointer with 71 seconds to go for a 75-75 tie.  Yoder hit once from the line with 38 seconds left for a 76-75 margin before Karissa Smedley hit twice from the stripe six seconds later for a one-point GCU margin.

GBC called its only timeout of the extra session and got the ball in the hands of Kulesza, looking for veteran leadership.  She drove to the net and fed one to Betz, who hit the layup for a 78-77 margin.

Samantha Jones drove looking to put the Lions ahead, but she missed and Betz came down with the rebound that resulted in a tie-up with 0.8 seconds left.  Goldey-Beacom had the possession arrow and simply inbounded the ball.

McCarron tied her career high with 18 points, Yoder had 17 and eight rebounds, Ciszkowski notched 16 and 10 for her first double-double of the season and Kulesza scored 13 in going 11-for-12 from the foul line.

Ciszkowski now is 12th in program history with 956 career points.

A major key for the Lightning was holding Gillette to just four points after intermission after her scoring barrage in the first 20 minutes.  Gillette closed with 19 points and Stanescu added 13 for the Lions, who persevered despite four players fouling out.

Goldey-Beacom (8-18, 5-9 CACC) now is just 1 1/2 games in back of Georgian Court (6-19, 6-7) for the fourth and final CACC Tournament spot from the South Division.

Goldey-Beacom next Saturday is home on Senior Day against Holy Family, beginning at 1:00 pm.  The men's contest between the same schools followed at 3:00 pm.
