Men’s Basketball Moves Into First-Place Tie and Clinches a Spot in the CACC Tournament With 76-71 Triumph at Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom rallied from 13 points down in the second half, moved into a first-place tie in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division and clinched a spot in the conference tournament with a 76-71 triumph at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Three weeks after coming back from 18 points down in the second half to win over Bridgeport, Goldey-Beacom today was in a 49-36 hole with 15:22 remaining.  But things really got going when the Lightning went on a 12-2 run in grabbing a 58-57 lead with 7:26 remaining.  Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) scored four points in that time and fellow sophomore Jalen Robinson (South Orange, NJ) ended it with a 3-pointer.

It remained close until McQueen hit a massive layup with 2:36 left, giving his side a 72-66 lead.  Anthony Gooden kept the Lions in it thanks to a 3-pointer with 2:08 to play for a three-point deficit.

The Lightning then outworked the Lions on the other end, getting three offensive rebounds that kept all the momentum with the visitors.  Junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) finished that possession by hitting once from the stripe with 1:18 remaining for a 73-69 game.

Cam Edmonds made one free throw with 47 seconds left and another with seven seconds to go for a 73-71 game.  Freshman Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) then hit once from the line with 5.4 seconds to go for a three-point contest.

The Lions had one final chance, but Edmonds launched one from three-quarter court that ended out of bounds.

Junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) scored 14 points, McQueen netted 13, freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) poured in 12, Marsh had 10 and seven rebounds with sophomore Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) getting nine and eight for the Lightning.

Edmonds scored 17 points with Donavin Crawford adding 12 for the Lions (5-19, 4-9 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (11-14, 8-6) now is tied with Chestnut Hill (8-6) and Jefferson (8-6) for first in the division.  The top two teams in each of the two divisions host a quarterfinal game.

Goldey-Beacom next Saturday is home on Senior Day against Holy Family, beginning at 3:00 pm.  The women's contest between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.
