Women’s Basketball Rolls to 70-56 Win at Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom played a complete game and recorded its first victory of the season with a 70-56 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Wilmington (DE) in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom got its offense going late in the first half, using a 19-7 run in just under seven minutes for a 38-25 lead with 15 seconds left.  Sophomore Lydia Betz (Pittsburgh, PA) again continued to be a force with five points and freshman Angie Zagone (Woodbury Heights, NJ) came off the bench to pour in five.

The Lightning's cushion at the break was 38-27 thanks in large part to eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals from senior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE).  Betz had six points and four blocks with Zagone and freshman Amber Furtado (Deerfield, NH) netting five points apiece.

Goldey-Beacom' defense also was on display in the opening half, forcing 12 turnovers and limiting Wilmington to just 31 percent shooting (11-of-36) that included 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

The Lightning were relentless in the third, using a fast-break offense in which the Wildcats seemingly had zero answers.  GBC (1-7, 1-3 CACC) ended the period on an 11-5 run over the last four minutes to take a 60-45 lead, courtesy of five points in the spurt from junior Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR).

The visitors shot 53 percent (8-of-15) from the floor in that time and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Goldey-Beacom in the fourth turned to its defense to close the game and notch its 29th victory in the last 31 meetings with Wilmington.  The home side shot just 26 percent (5-of-19) from the field in the quarter and 32 percent (23-of-72) for the contest with 20 turnovers.

Dyes had 12 points and five assists with Ciszkowski getting nine points and 10 rebounds. Betz totaled nine points, five blocks and four rebounds, senior Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) recorded nine points, four rebounds and three steals, Garcia netted eight points with Furtado adding seven.

Emma Brown amassed 14 points and 22 rebounds with Reynah Rattliff scoring 13 points for Wilmington (0-9, 0-4).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is home against Felician as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
