Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brian Blanchet’s Late-Game Heroics Propel Men’s Basketball to Enthralling 68-65 Triumph Over Chestnut Hill

Sophomore Brian Blanchet (North Babylon, NY) hit two go-ahead 3-pointers in the final 65 seconds and Goldey-Beacom survived a last-gasp effort in recording a 68-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Chestnut Hill at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom was in a 62-51 hole with just under seven minutes left after Chestnut Hill limited the home side to only three field goals over a 10-minute stretch.  A 14-6 run was keyed by four points from Jeremiah Gorham and three from Kamal Lee.

Blanchet got things going by canning a three-pointer with 6:32 to go for a 62-54 contest.  Sophomore Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) hit four times from the line and junior Emarquis Jones (Brooklyn, NY) hit twice as part of nine straight points for the Lightning, closing to 62-60 with 2:18 left.

That run hit 11 consecutive points when sophomore Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) made a layup with 1:43 to play for a 62-62 tie.

The Griffins on their next possession desperately were looking to get back on the board and did so with 1:21 left, when Lee hit a jumper for a 64-62 contest.

Goldey-Beacom on its next possession showed poise and Powell looked into the left corner to find a wide-open Blanchet, who canned a triple with 1:05 remaining for a 65-64 game.

Chestnut Hill on its next trip got the ball in the hands of Gorham, who was fouled with 40 seconds to go.  He made 1-of-2 from the stripe for a 65-65 tie.

Powell on the other end drove looking for a GBC lead, but he missed and junior Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) got a big offensive rebound.  He then passed out to Blanchet, who drilled his latest clutch 3-pointer from the right wing with 23 seconds to go for a 68-65 margin.

The Griffins went for a quick deuce, but Gorham missed a layup.  Tyler Spencer got the offensive rebound, but he missed in close and Akande got the rebound.

Blanchet was fouled with four seconds left and missed the front end of a 1-and-1.  Chestnut Hill had one more chance, but Lee missed a long 3-pointer as time expired.

Williams scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Powell also netted 15 points for the Lightning (5-2, 2-1 CACC).  Blanchet scored nine points with a trio of 3-pointers and Jones also poured in nine points.

Gorham scored 19 points and Lee added 17 for the Griffins (2-6, 1-1).

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday is at Wilmington (DE) for an 8:00 pm contest.
