Women’s Basketball Falls, 72-57, at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom surrendered a late run in the fourth quarter and opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a 72-57 loss at Caldwell in Caldwell, NJ.
 
The Lightning in the first quarter played great on both ends of the floor, shooting 62 percent (8-of-13) from the field and held the Cougars to just 36 percent (5-of-14).  Sophomore Lydia Betz (Pittsburgh, PA), named this week to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, scored five points in the period with senior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) and sophomore Marasia Dyes (Binghamton, NY) adding four apiece.
 
GBC (0-5, 0-1 CACC) held a 29-27 cushion at halftime, shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field and limiting the Cougars to just 35 percent (9-of-26).  Freshman Kato Van Heuverbeke (Waregem, Belgium) poured in seven points with Ciszkowski and Dyes netting six apiece.
 
The Lightning trailed 52-48 with 8:16 remining, but gave up a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to put the Cougars ahead 66-52 with 2:45 left.  Lucy Coogan scored six points in that time with Jah'Nel Lewis adding four.
 
Betz closed with 13 points and eight rebounds, giving her double figures in points all five games this season.  Ciszkowski and junior Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR) netted 11 points apiece, Dyes scored 10 and Van Heuverbeke added nine.
 
Lewis poured in 24 points with Coogan and Neysa Aguilar each netting 16 for Caldwell (4-1, 1-0).
 
Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is at Dominican (NY) for a 1:00 pm contest.
