Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Anthony Akande’s Layup With Five Seconds Left Propels Men’s Basketball to 66-65 Triumph at Caldwell

Sophomore Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) converted a layup with five seconds left and Goldey-Beacom survived a last-season miss in a 66-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Caldwell in Caldwell, NJ.

Melvin Evans hit a layup with 50 seconds left to give Caldwell a 65-62 lead for the home team's final points of the game.  Junior Masud Stewart (Philadelphia, PA) came down on the other end and made a layup nine seconds later for a one-point deficit.

The Lightning fouled on the other end, but it was just their sixth team foul and the Cougars had a fresh 20 seconds on the shot clock.  Kirk Parsons missed a layup, but Terence Thompson hauled in the offensive rebound to keep things alive for the Cougars.

However, Thompson was stripped by Stewart and Goldey-Beacom was off and running.  He dribbled down the court and found Akande, who laid it home to put the visitors ahead.

Caldwell rushed things looking for the win, but Todd Rochelle's runner was off the mark as time expired.

Sophomore Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ), picked to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll the last two weeks, scored 14 points and has reached double figures in all five of his team's games.  He has poured in at least 20 points in three of those contests.

Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) netted 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting with fellow juniors Emarquis Jones (Brooklyn, NY) and Elisha Brown (Bowie, MD) adding 11 apiece for the Lightning (4-1, 1-0 CACC).

Evans poured in 16 points and Jaryn Bull added 12 for Caldwell (0-5, 0-1), which shot just 35 percent (24-of-68) from the floor and 4-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Goldey-Beacom opened on the offensive with a 19-7 run over 7 1/2 minutes to grab a 34-22 lead with 3:06 remaining in the opening half.  Williams netted seven points in that span with Jones and Brown adding four apiece.

The Cougars got it together late in the half, ending the period with a 10-2 run in closing to 36-32.  Markeis Isley scored four points in the spurt.

Williams ended the half with 10 points and Jones added seven for the Lightning, who held the Cougars to just 33 percent shooting (10-of-30) in the half and 1-of-9 from 3-point range.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday visits Dominican (NY) for a 3:00 pm contest.
