Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rory Ciszkowski Reaches 1,000 Career Points in Women’s Basketball’s 43-37 Loss to UDC

Senior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) became the 12th in program history to reach 1,000 career points, but a late burst from her side was not enough in Goldey-Beacom's 43-37 season-opening loss to the District of Columbia in Wilmington, DE.

One of the College's most prolific competitors in any sport, the 2024 second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick got the mark on a layup with 6 1/2 minutes left in the first half.   She ended the contest with 11 points and now stands at 1,006 career.

Ciszkowski's milestone was one of the few highlights in the opening half for the Lightning, who could not overcome a relentless defense from the Firebirds.  Despite Ciszkowski's six points, Goldey-Beacom shot just 25 percent (6-of-24) from the field and was down 23-12 at the break.

The Lightning defense held the Firebirds to a mere 31 percent (10-of-32) from the floor and 1-of-11 from 3-point range.

Goldey-Beacom then went on a charge, netting 10 straight points bridging the third and fourth quarter in closing to 29-28 with 8:35 left.  Ciszkowski scored four points in that time with senior Gaia Zimbardo (Parma, Italy) and junior Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR) adding three apiece.

That span lasted almost 3 1/2 minutes and UDC went nearly five minutes without a field goal.

The runs continued with the Firebirds scoring nine straight to open a 38-28 margin with 2:11 to play.  Aiyana Ellis netted seven points in that time.

Goldey-Beacom (0-1) answered with five straight for a 38-33 deficit with 78 seconds to go.  Sophomore Lydia Betz (Pittsburgh, PA) hit two free throws, made a layup and Ciszkowski connected once from the line.

A seemingly unending parade of missed free throws and time outs did not see UDC's lead get within five.  But the Firebirds held on despite being limited to just 28 percent shooting (17-of-61) and going 1-of-18 from 3-point range.

Ciszkowski hauled in 11 rebounds and Betz netted 10 points.  Ellis had 15 points and 11 rebounds for UDC (1-0)

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is back at Wilmington University to face Daemen, beginning after 3:00 pm.
