Volleyball Nets Three CACC Weekly Awards

Another incredible week for Goldey-Beacom's volleyball team saw Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for a fourth time this season, fellow sophomore Juliana Malena (Miami, FL) picked Setter of the Week a second time with sophomore Gabi Fullwood (Powder Springs, GA) named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Fernandez against continued to be the glue on defense with 49 digs over two matches.  She had 33 digs Thursday against Georgian Court and 16 on Saturday vs. Caldwell.
 
An explosive dynamo who turns a sure kill into a stunning zero attack, Fernandez has put the Lightning in position to win on a constant basis with her strong defense that helps generate a powerful offense.  A second team all-league pick a season ago, Fernandez is fifth in the country (second in the league) with 553 digs and seventh in team annals with 1,136 career digs.
 
Malena dished 88 assists over two matches and became the eighth in school history to reach 1,000 career assists.  She had 48 assists and 11 digs Thursday vs. Georgian Court before notching 40 and 11 on Saturday against Caldwell.
 
A gifted playmaker who has taken control of the office, Malena has recorded six straight double-doubles and 15th this season.  She is 56th in the nation with 779 assists and eighth in team annals with 1,001 career.
 
Fullwood closed with 24 kills, a .327 hitting percentage and seven blocks over two matches.  She recorded 16 kills and a .308 percentage Thursday vs. Georgian Court before getting eight and .375 on Saturday against Caldwell.
 
Making an immediate impact in the middle, Fullwood has been a noticeable presence with her solid hitting and blocking.  She is second on the team with 225 kills and first among regulars with a .330 hitting percentage.
 
Goldey-Beacom (15-11, 9-4 CACC), headed to the CACC Tournament a second straight year, is tied for second place with Holy Family in the CACC South Division.  The top two teams in each of the two divisions hosts a quarterfinal game next Tuesday.  Championship Weekend will be at Goldey-Beacom from November 22-23.
