Goldey-Beacom played solidly against a nationally ranked team, but left Philadelphia with a 70-56 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to No. 19 Holy Family.
Always providing a challenge against elite teams, Goldey-Beacom did not disappoint in opening a 28-17 lead over the first 11 1/2 minutes. Julie Kulesza (Wilmington, DE) scored 10 points and fellow senior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) added five for the Lightning, who shot 11-of-19 from the floor in that time and canned five 3-pointers.
The Tigers fought back, ending the half on a 17-7 run in closing to a 35-34 deficit. Lola Ibarrondo netted eight points in that time.
Holy Family continued its upswing in the third quarter, outscoring GBC 22-13 to open a 56-48 cushion. Taylor Hinkle scored eight points with Carolyn Prevost adding six for the Tigers, who shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field.
GBC did everything it could to stay in the contest, scoring four straight points in moving to 62-54 with 3:49 that was capped on a layup by freshman Lydia Betz (Pittsburgh, PA). But the Tigers (17-3, 9-0 CACC) ended with an 8-2 run for their ninth consecutive victory.
Kulesza scored 18 points to go with six rebounds and five assists, McCarron netted 11 points with sophomore Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) adding eight for the Lightning (7-14, 4-5).
Hinkle had 15 points and 18 rebounds, Prevost scored 12 points, Kaelah Carter netted 11 with Ibarrondo and Kara Meredith adding 10 apiece for Holy Family, which is ranked second in the East Region according to D2CSC.
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Caldwell for a 1:00 pm game.
