Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Zakari McQueen’s Heroics Lead Men’s Basketball To Stunning Overtime Victory Over Bridgeport

Sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) arguably enjoyed his finest day with Goldey-Beacom, drilling the tying 3-pointer late in regulation and the go-ahead 3-pointer late in overtime for his team's incredible 86-82 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Bridgeport at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom was in a 68-50 hole with 6:29 remaining before staging an incredible comeback.  The Lightning unbeliveably ended regulation on a 22-4 run by shooting 8-of-9 from the floor with six 3-pointers and McQueen scoring 14 points in that time.

Junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) hit a 3-pointer with 2:01 left in regulation for a 70-67 deficit before Aliou Cisse made a layup with 93 seconds to go for a five-point game.  Taylor got it to 72-69 on a layup with 63 seconds remaining.

The Lightning had all this offensive firepower going, but now needed a stop.  They got it when Caleb Jacobs missed a layup and freshman Anthony Akande (Newark, DE) got the rebound.

Now it was time to pay it off on the other end and McQueen did just that, drilling a 3-pointer from the right corner with 21 seconds left for a 72-72 tie.  Nick Traill looked to give the Purple Knights the win, but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Bridgeport led 80-76 with 2:32 to play in overtime, but GBC got things deadlocked.  McQueen's layup with 2:14 remaining got it to two and senior David Robinson (Philadelphia, PA) made two free throws, one with 1:43 remaining and another with 60 seconds left.

Junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) came up big on the defensive end, blocking Cisse's shot and corralling the rebound.  McQueen made sure to capitalize, canning a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left for Goldey-Beacom's first lead of the game at 83-80.

Robinson then came up with a steal off Jacobs' turnover and the free throw game ensued.  Robinson hit once with 17 seconds to play for an 84-80 game and McQueen converted twice with seven seconds left for an 86-80 contest.

McQueen had yet another stunning performance, scoring a career-best 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting and tied his personal high with six 3-pointers.  He closed with 26 points after halftime and now has scored at least 20 points in five of his last eight contests.

Taylor netted 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the Lightning, who shot 51 percent (20-of-39) from the floor after intermission and 10-of-20 from 3-point range.  It is the first time in the program's history they have upended the Purple Knights in consecutive seasons.

Cisse scored 16 points, Traill netted 13 with Michel Mdayishimiye adding 11 for Bridgeport, which only shot 44 percent (30-of-68) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday visits Holy Family for an 8:00 pm game.  The women's game between the same schools is at 6:00 pm.
