Women’s Tennis Drops Hard-Fought Match to Wilmington (DE)

(boxscore)

Goldey-Beacom found itself in a tight matchup against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-rival Wilmington (DE) and saw four singles rubbers go to a third set in a 5-2 loss at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning (2-1, 0-1 CACC) dropped the doubles point, but that was before the No. 2 doubles squad of reigning CACC Rookie of the Year Nahomi Quinonez (Manta, Ecuador) along with junior Zehra Canbaz (Denizli, Turkiye) won their match.  Battling throughout, the duo recorded a 6-4 triumph over Ming Fu Chen and Yelyzaveta Sylka.

Senior Elizabeth Mova (Sevastopol, Ukraine), second team All-CACC last year, rallied at No. 1 singles for a win.  Gutting her way in the second set, she won that and cruised in the third for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Siana MacDonald.

Freshman Sofia Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) also rallied from a set down and continued to show she is a force at fifth singles.  With the third set going to a tiebreak, Lopez recorded a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) win over Chen.

Canbaz was handed a tough loss at second singles by Molly Carlberg after winning the first set, falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.  Senior Lucia Corte (Gijon, Spain) was in a tough encounter at No. 6 singles and went to a third-set tiebreak, but fell 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) to Gloria Barcaro for the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is back at Delcastle to face Jefferson, beginning at noon.
