Softball Splits Two Games at the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom put together a solid performance in recording a 4-0 victory over Bloomfield at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament after it opened with a 6-1 loss to Bridgeport in New Castle, DE.

No. 3 seed GBC remains in the elimination bracket and on Friday at 1:30 pm will face the loser of the day's earlier contest between top-seeded Wilmington (DE) and No. 2 seed Bridgeport.

Goldey-Beacom against Bloomfield (20-23) took a 1-0 lead in the last of the second inning.  Second team All-CACC pick Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) led off with a single, reached second when Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) was hit by a pitch, took third on a sacrifice from fellow sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) and scored on a passed ball.

The Lightning's offense really got going in the third for a 4-0 lead.  Sophomore Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) had a leadoff single, freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) followed with a single and senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) crushed a long double to plate pinch-runner Davi Jimenez (Vineland, NJ) for a 2-0 game.  Junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) followed with a two-run single to make it a four-run contest.

Dagsboro, DE senior Abigail O'Shields (18-9) took over from there.  The first team all-conference pick struck out five over seven innings for her 18th victory, tying the school's single-season record and moving her into a tie for seventh on the program's career list.

Davis and Scott each had two hits for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom (26-27) in the first game ran into the red-hot pitching of Kaite Burawski, who struck out 10 and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.  She ended the contest allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings.

The Purple Knights (26-20) opened the scoring in the first when Mya Jones had an RBI single and Samantha Schiebe lifted a sacrifice fly.  But Jones did her real damage in the fourth inning, crushing a three-run double that made it a 5-0 contest.

The Lightning showed life in the sixth to crack the scoreboard.  Davis lined a leadoff single and Lowry, who joined Davis in being named second team All-CACC, followed by cranking a long triple to right field.

For Lowry, it was her 11th triple to set a new single-season program record and 21st career that moved her one behind the top mark held by GBC Athletics Hall-of-Famer Stephanie Topolie (1998-2001).

GBC in the seventh loaded the bases with one out looking to dent the scoreboard, but Burawski got out of it for the final.

Davis closed with two hits, giving her 187 career that keeps her tops in the program's NCAA era and third overall.  O'Shields struck out four over 3 2/3 innings to extend her own single-season program mark to 227 strikeouts.

Jones went 3-for-3 and Meg McFarland had two hits for Bridgeport.
