Softball Shows Plenty of Grit in Season-Ending Loss to No. 17 Wilmington at the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom battled reigning NCAA East Region champion and No. 17 Wilmington to the very end, continuing the same determination it displayed the entire season in a tough 4-3 loss at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in New Castle, DE.

GBC (26-28, 14-8 CACC) had yet another strong year, this time stepping up its schedule against some of the area's elite squads from outside the conference and closing with its best league mark since 2017.  The third-place showing matched the Lightning's best finish at the CACC Tournament, also accomplished in 2005.

Wilmington struck first with two runs in the last of the second inning.  Sam Freeland lined an RBI single and Emma Zimmerman added her own run-scoring single.

GBC came through in the third for a 2-2 tie.  After freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) and senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) each singled before Frank was thrown out at home after a single from junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ).  But the squad did not have to worry as junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) had an RBI single and sophomore Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) followed with a sacrifice fly.

The game remained a battle before the Wildcats broke the tie in the fifth.  Sara Miller lined an RBI double and Taylor Gillis followed with a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 margin.

Goldey-Beacom continued to battle into the sixth, getting an RBI single from senior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ) to make it a 4-3 contest.  But Haley Downin came on and recorded the last four outs for the save.

Frank, Bohmann, Monzo and junior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) all had two hits for the Lightning.

Miller, Freeland, Lexi Moore and Julia Thuer all recorded two hits for the Wildcats (39-14).  Delani Sheehan (16-7) tossed 5 2/3 innings before Downin recorded her second save.

The weekend started with senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) named first team all-conference for GBC with Lowry, Davis and Bohmann all tabbed second team.
