Softball Splits Two at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom in game one of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Caldwell recorded a 7-6 win, but in the nightcap could not stay undefeated in league play with a 1-0 setback in Caldwell, NJ.

Caldwell in game one gained a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of RBI singles from Taylor Quinn and Jessica Klein before the former crossed home on a throwing error.

The Lightning quickly responded in the second when junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) continued her amazing play.  She blasted a leadoff home run for her fifth long ball of the year, tied for the second-best single-season mark in team history.

The deficit grew to 4-1 entering the fifth, when Goldey-Beacom exploded for six runs and took the lead for good.  Sophomore Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) lined an RBI single, senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) followed with an RBI single and Bohmann greeted new pitcher Allison Winters with a three-run double for a 7-4 margin.

The Cougars made it interesting in the last of the frame when Riley Riendeau stroked a two-run double for a 7-6 margin.  But that was the home side's last baserunner as senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) retired the last seven batters.

O'Shields (12-5) again was outstanding, striking out five over seven innings for her 12th straight victory.  Her 151 strikeouts, already a GBC single-season record, puts her in a tie with Tiffany Frick (2002-05) for eighth in team history.  Her 12 victories are tied for eighth in one season and tied for 12th career in school annals.

Bohmann had two hits and four RBI, her team-leading 14th multi-RBI contest for a team-high 41 RBI.  Friel also recorded two hits.

Ashleigh Tavaska rapped three hits for Caldwell.

The second game was a classic softball pitchers' duel with both teams looking to scratch out a run.  Goldey-Beacom did its best, but had a combined three runners thrown out at third base between the fourth and fifth innings.

However, it was the Cougars who drew the only blood with a run in the sixth.  Klein got things going with a leadoff triple and scored when Amanda Batista dropped a sacrifice bunt.

The loss ended the longest unbeaten CACC start for Goldey-Beacom (16-19, 6-1 CACC) dating to the earliest available records in 2005.

Lowry had three hits and Davis notched two for the Lightning.  Tavaska recorded two hits and Winters struck out three over seven innings for the Cougars (15-11, 3-3).

Goldey-Beacom on Monday will make up its doubleheader against No. 22 Wilmington (DE).  First pitch now will be at 1:00 pm and the second game will not begin before 3:30 pm due to the eclipse.
