Softball Drops Two at Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom looked to continue its strong play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, but fell by scores of 3-2 and 5-3 at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in game one had things going in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  After freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) and junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) each singled, sophomore Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) hit a liner that turned into an RBI single and an error that plated both runners.

Georgian Court got even with Charlee Mae Sinderud lining an RBI double in the last of the first and Brittany Gable scoring on an error in the second for a 2-2 score.

The contest then became a pitchers' duel with senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) and Georgian Court's Julia Lapp combining to allow just two baserunners from the third through the sixth innings.  The Lightning broke that by getting a runner on third with one out in the top of the seventh, but could not push across the go-ahead tally.

Gabriella Aleman ended things as the leadoff batter in the last of the seventh.  She launched one to left field that hit off the top of the fence and just inside the fair pole for the finale.

O'Shields (13-8) again was outstanding, striking out seven over six-plus innings in allowing just three runs – two earned – and four hits.  She got a strikeout in game two and now is at 181 on the year, fourth best in team history and already the program's single-season record.

Frank ended with two of the Lightning's seven hits.

Lapp struck out three, yielding two runs – one earned – and seven hits over seven innings for the Lions.

GBC (19-25, 9-7 CACC) in the first inning of game two again scored first when Frank doubled and junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) doubled her home for a 1-0 lead.  Georgian Court leveled things in the last of the frame as Kaitlyn Stufft doubled home Adriana Mungo.

The Lions (18-18, 10-6) in the fourth again were on the attack and took the lead.  Gable led off with a home run to center field and Stufft got her second RBI on a single to right, plating Isabella Molina for a 3-1 margin.

GCU got two more runs in the fifth before Goldey-Beacom responded in the sixth.  Scott stepped up in the leadoff spot and clubbed her third home run of the season for a 5-2 game.

The Lightning got within 5-3 in the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD), but the visitors left the tying run on base.

Scott had three hits, Frank, Simpson and sophomore Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) notched two apiece with junior Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) getting six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings for the Lightning.

Gable and Stufft got three hits apiece and Janelle Blaszka struck out three over seven innings for the Lions.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against Bloomfield.  First pitch is at 2:00 pm.
