Women's Basketball Upsets Post, 68-64, to Advance to CACC Semifinals

Goldey-Beacom headed north to face Post in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals and pulled off a 68-64 upset in Waterbury, CT.

The Lightning, never trailing at any point in the game, held Post to 34 percent shooting from the floor and five players scored in double figures.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Goldey-Beacom extended its lead to 37-27 on a jumper from senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE). The Lightning led by as many as 13, closing the quarter 53-45.

Post came out firing in the fourth quarter, closing the deficit to 53-51 off 3-pointers from Dede Stevenson and Naj White.

Over the next three and a half minutes, freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) scored four points of the Lightning's five to further the lead back to 58-51 with 5:13 to go.

With 2:57 remaining, a steal from Stevenson was converted to two points to have the hosts trail 63-61. A quick turnover and foul from the Lightning put Stevenson at the foul line, who knocked down 1-of-2 to make it a one-point game.

Following two made free throws from Stevens, Post's Trinity Bravo nailed a jumper with 1:42 left to make the score 65-64 in favor of the Lightning.

Tough defense from the Goldey-Beacom in the final minute held Post scoreless and the triumph was sealed on a free throw from Stevens at 68-64.

Stevens closed with 16 points and nine rebounds. Juniors Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ), Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) and freshman Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA) finished with 11 points apiece, White notched 10 points, and sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) added seven points and 11 rebounds for GBC (8-21, 6-10).

Stevenson finished with 15 points and six assists, White had 12 points, and Taina Pagan had 10 points and seven rebounds for Post (17-10, 12-4).

Goldey-Beacom will be back in action on Saturday in Caldwell, NJ for the CACC Tournament semifinals to take on Chestnut Hill at 7:00 pm.
