Women’s Basketball’s Incredible Season Ends With 66-48 Loss to Chestnut Hill in the CACC Tournament Semifinals

Goldey-Beacom left everything on the floor, but could not overcome Chestnut Hill for a 66-48 loss in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinals in Caldwell, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom, coming off Tuesday's 68-64 upset of North Division champion Post in the quarterfinals, looked to get a quick start after rallying two weeks ago to win at Chestnut Hill.  The Griffins would have none of it, scoring the first 11 points and owning a 20-12 lead by taking advantage of numerous second chances.

Emily Sekerak scored seven points with Caleigh Edwards adding five.

The Lightning continued to push with their lineup that has gotten this far with seven newcomers.  But the Griffins had nine offensive rebounds in the first half and held a 38-23 lead at the break thanks to Edwards' nine points and Sekerak's seven.

Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE), named third team All-CACC, did all she could to keep GBC in it with seven points and freshman Genesis Garcia (Aguada, PR) added five.

Goldey-Beacom in the third quarter turned to its vaunted full-court press in an attempt to change the momentum.  It worked with an invigorated resurgence, holding Chestnut Hill to 30 percent shooting (3-for-10) and forcing eight turnovers.

But the Griffins in the end were took much, shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field in the final quarter and 45 percent (25-of-56) overall.

Ciszkowski finished with 10 points, sophomore Karlee Lemon (Williamsburg, VA) poured in eight, Garcia and senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) scored seven apiece with freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) adding six for the Lightning (8-22).

Avery White poured in a game-high 16 points with Edwards adding 10 for the Griffins (20-8).

This ends an outstanding career for Stevens, whose play in the post was a huge factor in getting GBC back to the semifinals.  She ends just outside the program's top 20 list with 661 career points and also hauled in 510 rebounds.

The loss ends a great finish to the season for the Lightning, who entered tonight having won six of their last seven contests that included the aforementioned triumph at the Griffins.  The only setback in that run was to third-ranked Jefferson, which also advanced to Sunday's final.

Goldey-Beacom was playing in the CACC semifinals for the sixth time in program history and the first since 2019, when it closed fourth in the South Division and upset North Division-champion Dominican (NY) in the quarterfinals.
