Softball Sees a Split at Staten Island

Goldey-Beacom stepped out of conference play and worked to split the second doubleheader of the season against Staten Island, 6-1 and 4-6, in Staten Island, NY.

In game one, scoring was opened by the Lightning in the fourth off an RBI single from sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD).

The fifth inning saw a three-run rally for the Lightning off RBI singles from freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA), Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) and fellow junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK).

Staten Island's single run came off an RBI single to left field from Aileen Balderas.

Two final runs came for the Lightning in the sixth and seventh innings off another RBI single from the ever-reliable Frank and a defensive error from the Dolphins to secure the 6-1 Lightning victory.

Frank closed 3-for-4 with two RBI, Simpson notched two hits and two RBI, and Lowry finished with two hits and one RBI. Senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) continues to be dominant on the mound, striking out 10 in a complete game.

Five players for Staten Island closed with a hit.

Game two saw the Lightning start on top once again off an RBI single from Bohmann fired through the right side.

Continuing on a hot streak, Goldey-Beacom took a 3-0 lead after Lowry showed her speed to make it to home on a fielder's choice before Simpson singled to center field to score Bohmann.

The fourth inning saw Staten Island tally a run on the board on a grounded out play from Alyssa Acosta for a 3-1 score.

After the Lightning extended its lead to 4-1 courtesy of an RBI single from sophomore Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN), Staten Island cut the lead by two after Anissa Acosta found a gap for a two RBI-single.

Staten Island stayed consistent at the plate and Aliveah Warner connected for a two-RBI double to give the Dolphins a 5-4 lead.

Having held the Lightning to three batters, Staten Island sealed the 6-4 win after Balderas lined an RBI double to left center.

Bohmann and Scott closed with two hits and one RBI apiece, and Lowry notched two hits. Sophomore Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) pitched a solid 4 2/3 innings, recording five strikeouts for GBC (12-18, 2-0 CACC).

Frank got a hit in the nightcap, extending her hitting streak to 19 games.  It is the longest hitting streak with individual Goldey-Beacom records only available beginning with the 2012 season.

Acosta closed with two hits and two RBI, Balderas had two hits and one RBI, and Warner added one hit and two RBI for Staten Island (9-13, 2-0 ECC).

Goldey-Beacom returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday with a 2:00 pm doubleheader against Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, PA.
