Abigail O'Shield's 17 Strikeouts Lifts Softball to a Sweep over Saint Rose

Senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) led Goldey-Beacom in a 5-0 triumph over Saint Rose before a 14-11 second game thriller in a non-conference sweep at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

O'Shields dominated from the first pitch in game one, recording 17 strikeouts and giving Goldey-Beacom huge momentum to rally  to 12 hits to Saint Rose's one.

Scoring opened in the second after senior Gabriella Monzo (Northfield, NJ) fired an RBI-single up the middle to drive home junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK). Sophomore Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) and freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) had singles of their own to further the Lightning's lead to 3-0.

Another RBI-single from Monzo came in the third before a final run came from junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ), who lined a triple to right field to bring senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) home.

Monzo closed with two hits and two RBI, Frank notched two hits and one RBI, and sophomore Morgan Scott finished with two hits.

Game two saw a similar start with the Lightning opening the scoring, courtesy of an RBI-single from Lowry.

But Saint Rose caught a second wind, rallying for five second inning runs to take a 5-1 lead. A defensive error for the Lightning cost one run, and two RBI-doubles from Ellen Fuda and Ella Leduc added the other runs.

However, the fourth saw Goldey-Beacom have a rally of their own, taking an 8-5 lead off a double from Monzo, singles from junior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE), sophomore Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA), and Frank, a sacrifice bunt from Davis, a wild pitch, and a homerun from Bohmann.

Saint Rose were able to cut the lead to 8-7 in favor of the Lightning following a sacrifice fly from Maddy Bland and a defensive error, but the Lightning stayed resilient.

A second rally of five runs gave the Lightning a bigger cushion. A sacrifice fly from Frank tallied another run, followed by an RBI-double from Davis. The Lightning closed the scoring with three RBI-singles from Bohmann, Scott, and sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) to take a 13-7 lead.

Saint Rose tallied four more runs off a three RBI-homer from Kelsey Higgins and an RBI-double from Bland, before Friel secured the Lightning's 14-11 triumph on a defensive error from Saint Rose.

Scott closed 3-for-4 with one RBI, Bohmann and Friel finished with two hits and two RBI each, and Frank, Lowry, and Simpson notched two hits and one RBI apiece for GBC (8-16).

Bland had three hits and two RBI, Higgins had two hits and three RBI, and Fuda and Leduc each had two hits and two RBI for Saint Rose (5-5).

Goldey-Beacom returns to the Jackson Complex on Sunday to face Southern New Hampshire in a 1:00 pm doubleheader in Wilmington, DE.
