Softball Opens Florida Trip With Two Contests

Goldey-Beacom began its trip in Florida with a 10-2 loss against Concordia-Saint Paul before a 12-9 setback to Winona State in Clermont.

Concordia in the last of the first inning scored five times, keyed by a three-run triple from Alexus Houston.  Sydney Pelzer added an RBI single and Annalise Scamehorn had a sacrifice fly.

GBC got one back in the second for a 5-1 deficit.  Junior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) singled, took second when sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) walked, reached third when junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) walked and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE).

But the Golden Bears got five more in the second for a 10-1 lead, thanks to an RBI each from Houston, Clara Heislen and Danni Sharum.

The Lightning scored their final run in the third.  Junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) singled, reached second on a single from sophomore Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN), got to third on a single from freshman Samantha Guercia (Powder Springs, GA) and scored on Snover's single.

Scott and Snover had two hits apiece with Riley Rosenthal getting two hits for Concordia (7-2).

Winona State (11-2) posted five runs in the top of the first, thanks to a two-run double each from Alyssa Woelfel and Kaylie Scanlon.  GBC got two of those runs back in the last of the second when Guercia and Scott, who each reached on a single, scored on errors.

After the Warriors scored twice in the top of the third, the Lightning followed suit in the last of the frame for a 7-4 contest.  Bohmann dropped a bunt that turned into an RBI single and Scott followed with a sacrifice fly.

WSU got one in the bottom of the fourth before GBC (1-9) plated two in the fifth for an 8-6 game.  Bohmann again continued her impressive start with an RBI single and freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) scored on a passed ball.

Carly Englehart homered for the Warriors in the sixth to make it 10-6 before Sam Keller had an RBI double in the seventh and Kiley Slaats followed with a run-scoring single for a 12-6 score.

GBC made things interesting in the last of the seventh.  Bohmann again was at it with an RBI double and Scott had a two-run single for the final.

Bohmann had three hits in adding to her eye-popping start.  She has recorded a hit in eight of the Lightning's 10 games this season, batting .448 (13-of-29) with five extra-base hits and 15 RBI.

Scott recorded two hits and three RBI with Frank adding two hits.

Slaats had three hits for the Warriors (11-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday faces Upper Iowa at 9:15 am and Findlay at 11:30 am.  These games and all of the remaining scheduled contests on this trip are slated to be played in Winter Haven.
