Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Zayon Marsh Almost Unstoppable in Men’s Basketball’s 89-78 Loss at Dominican (NY)

Sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) went on a tear with 32 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but it was not enough for Goldey-Beacom in an 89-78 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Dominican (NY) in Orangetown, NY.

Marsh was a one-man wrecking crew in the paint, recording the second-best point total of his career that fell just shy of his personal-best 33 points December 3, 2022 against Holy Family.  His 861 career points keeps him in 17th place in team annals and his 441 career rebounds keeps him sixth.

Marsh has averaged 22.2 over his last five contests and has scored at least 20 points six times this season.

These teams always engage in a tough battle with neither rarely giving an inch and the first half today was no different.  Goldey-Beacom held Dominican to just 39 percent shooting (16-of-41) in the first half and 3-of-12 from three-point range, but still trailed 36-31 at halftime.

Senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) and sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) netted eight points apiece in the half, Marsh scored seven with senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) adding six.

The tussle continued into the second half, when the Lightning were chipping away in hopes the Chargers would crack.  GBC netted five straight points in just under a minute, closing to 52-46 with 13:12 left thanks to Marsh getting an old-fashioned three-point play.

Dominican looked to make some noise of its own and did, using a 24-11 spurt in just over six minutes to open a 76-57 cushion with 7:12 to play.  Joshua Serrano was a force with 13 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor in that time.

Bates finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, Derry scored 11 with Thomas adding 10 for the Lightning, who had their second four-game winning streak of the season snapped.

Seth Sharif-Brown poured in 19 points, Serrano netted 15, Javel Cherry scored 13 with Isaiah Honis added 11 for the Chargers (14-7, 6-4 CACC).

Things did get a little brighter for Goldey-Beacom (13-9, 8-2) with news that its 2 1/2-game lead over Jefferson (5-4) for first place in the CACC South Division remained, with the latter falling at Felician.

Goldey-Beacom is off until next Saturday, when it hosts Caldwell as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is at 3:00 pm, after the women go at 1:00 pm.
