Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 101-92 Setback by Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom and Caldwell played one that was a dream for fans of great offense, but the former was handed a 101-92 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The second half was a sight to behold with the teams combining for 114 points and both shooting over 60 percent from the floor.  But it was the Cougars who had their way, shooting an eye-popping 80 percent (20-of-25) from the field in that time that included a stunning 15-of-17 from two-point range.

The Lightning were doing everything they could to throw baking soda on the fire, staying in the contest with outstanding shooting.  Junior Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) nailed a huge 3-pointer with 5:56 left for an 80-74 deficit and senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) had an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:47 remaining for an 87-81 contest.

But Caldwell kept coming up with answers.  Mark Heber nailed two free throws with 83 seconds to go for a 95-87 contest and, after Derry's layup with 1:15 remaining, Darnell Evens stuck a jumper with 48 seconds to go for a 97-89 contest.

Sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) put on another show, scoring 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting with six rebounds one game after netting 32 points last Saturday at Dominican (NY).  He now is 16th in team history with 891 career points and sixth with 447 rebounds.

Derry netted 21 points, Joubert scored 14 with freshman Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) adding 12 for the Lightning.

Evans simply was incredible, scoring 37 points on 10-of-18 shooting and six assists despite playing the last 5 1/2 minutes with four fouls.  This included him scoring 21 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the second half.

Derrick Bueno was a force in the post with 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting, Geber poured in 19 and Melvin Evans hauled in 10 rebounds for the Cougars (10-11, 6-5 CACC), who shot 59 percent (35-of-59) from the floor and 10-of-20 from three-point range.

Goldey-Beacom (13-10, 8-3) saw its lead over second-place Jefferson (7-4) shrink to one game after the former won today at Bloomfield.  Chestnut Hill (6-6) is 2 1/2 games behind GBC in third.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday hosts Georgian Court for the middle game of its three-game homestand.  Tipoff is at 8:00 pm, which follows the 6:00 pm contest between the same schools.
