Men’s Basketball Punches Ticket to the CACC Tournament With 73-61 Triumph Over Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom held off a gallant Georgian Court squad and clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 73-61 victory at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning had work to do sitting in a 45-35 hole with 17:30 remaining and came through.  They went on a 22-7 run, combining great shooting and solid defense to gain a 57-52 lead with 7:22 left.  Sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) netted 11 points in that span with senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) adding five.

The Lions hung around, getting a jumper from Clint Wright Jr. with 6:23 to go and a shot from Donavin Crawford with 5:14 left for a 57-56 contest.

But those would be the visitors last field goals of the game.  Goldey-Beacom put away things with a 14-1 run over the next 2 1/2 minutes for a 71-57 lead with 1:54 left, thanks to Derry's eight points.

Bates had a season-best 21 points to go with 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and Derry had 15 and seven.  Senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) recorded 12 points and six assists with sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) getting 10 points and seven rebounds.

Crawford scored 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting with Wright adding 21 on 6-of-10 shooting for the Lions (2-21, 0-12 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (14-10, 9-3) is headed to the CACC Tournament for the sixth time in its last seven competitive seasons.  The squad maintained its one-game lead over Jefferson (8-4) for first place in the CACC South Division and now has a three-game cushion over idle Chestnut Hill (6-6) with four games left for a home quarterfinal in the league tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Post at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm game.
