Women’s Basketball Clinches Spot in the CACC Tournament Despite Loss at No. 3 Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom secured a place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, despite an 83-34 loss to third-ranked Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

GBC punched its ticket once it learned fifth-place Georgian Court was upset, 62-58, at Wilmington (DE).  The Lightning will be in the quarterfinals next Tuesday at either Post or Felician.

Goldey-Beacom did its best against a squad that entered undefeated in the league, but Jefferson scored the game's first 18 points.  The Rams ended the period with a 23-4 lead by shooting 45 percent (9-of-20) from the floor and seeing Haley Meinel netting eight points.

The Lightning looked to claw their way back in it, holding the Rams to just 39 percent shooting (7-of-18) in the second quarter.  But the home side continued its pressure with a 44-19 halftime lead, courtesy of 10 points from Sam Yencha and eight from Meinel.

Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) continued to be a major factor for GBC, scoring 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting with four 3-pointers.  Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) added eight points for the Lightning (6-21, 5-10 CACC).

Morgan Robinson had an incredible night for the Rams, getting a triple-double with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.  Yencha netted 15 points, Meinel scored 12, Emily Keehfuss poured in 11 with Cassie Murphy adding 10 for Jefferson (26-1, 15-0), which already clinched the best record in the league.

Goldey-Beacom this Saturday faces Wilmington (DE) as part of Hoop-It-Up, the College's annual celebration with friends and alumni during basketball season.  The women's game is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
