Softball Gains a Split Against Staten Island



Goldey-Beacom stormed to a 9-1 triumph in game two after battling to extra innings in an 11-10 game one loss against Staten Island at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.
 
Game two saw the Lightning strike in the first inning with an RBI double from freshman McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) to drive in senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE), who had reached via a single. Goldey-Beacom took a 2-0 lead following an RBI groundout from junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK).
 
Frank, who has shown nothing short of impressive play so far this season, found herself making a play once more in the second inning with another double to drive in three runs and give the Lightning a 5-0 lead.
 
Goldey-Beacom struck once again in the third, with three runs courtesy of a double from freshman Samantha Guercia (Powder Springs, GA), a muffed throw from Staten Island and a single from Davis to further the lead to 8-0.
 
Staten Island's only run came in the fourth inning from a home run from Olivia Wanser.
 
Goldey-Beacom closed the game in five innings thanks to another single from Guercia to drive home junior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ).
 
Frank closed 2-for-3 with four RBI, Guercia went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Davis notched three hits.
 
In game one, the Lightning struck first, with Lowry lining a triple to right center to score Guercia, who had reached via a double to left field.
 
Staten Island answered in the third inning with nine runs off seven hits, including two, two-RBI doubles from Wanser.
 
Goldey-Beacom began to cut away at the score, notching two runs in the third, off an RBI double from Bohmann and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ), to make the score 9-3.
 
Having held Staten Island to only three at-bats in the fourth, the Lightning fired in two more runs off a single from Lowry and a sacrifice bunt from Davis.

Staten Island furthered the score to 10-5 in the sixth off a dropped fly ball from Victoria Whalen to score Alyssa Acosta.
 
Pelcak up to the play in the sixth delivered another big play with an RBI single to give the Lightning another run for a score of 10-6.
 
Going into the seventh inning, the Lightning had all of the momentum, opening with a triple from Lowry, who was driven home by Davis on a ground out. Frank, having walked, found her way back to home plate of an RBI double from Bohmann who lined it to right center.
 
With bases loaded, junior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) stepped up to the plate and hit a single to drive in sophomores Morgan Scott (Elwood, IN) and Marah Schotz (Lockport, NY) to tie the score at 10-10.
 
Staten Island secured the 11-10 win off a defensive error from the Lightning.
 
Bohmann closed 3-for-3 with two RBI, Lowry went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Frank notched two hits. Senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) and sophomore Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) each struck out six for GBC (1-7).
 
Wanser closed with three hits and four RBI, Mariah Carcano had three hits and two RBI, and Whalen had two hits and two RBI for Staten Island (1-1).
 
Goldey-Beacom travels to Clermont, FL on Friday, facing Concordia-Saint Paul in the first game of The Spring Games.
