Women's Basketball Takes Thrilling 77-69 Overtime Triumph Against Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom found itself coming out on top in a thrilling overtime win, 77-69, against Caldwell in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

An exciting first quarter saw the Lightning on top, 17-10, before the Cougars fired back in the second to take a 35-32 lead at the half. Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) paced the Lightning with 10 points, but Jahnel Lewis on the other end proved difficult to stop, leading all scorers with 17 at halftime.

The third quarter saw a different Lightning side, who forced four turnovers over the first minute and a half and they took a 40-35 lead off the back of two 3-pointers from sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) and a layup from Stevens. Ciszkowski exploded for 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the third to help the Lightning to a 56-50 lead going into the fourth.

With 4:24 to go, the score was tied up at 58-58 following a layup from Lewis. Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter and, with the scores tied at 63-63, a final possession for Caldwell with 10 seconds to go proved unsuccessful. Stevens closed out with all seven of the Lightning's points in the quarter.

The beginning of the extra period saw the Lightning take a 73-65 lead following five points apiece from junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) and Ciszkowski. With 2:26 remaining, Caldwell's Lucy Coogan hit a free throw, followed by a jumper from freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) to push the Lightning's lead to 75-66 with 1:59 to go.

With 1:15 left, Tyler Dendy hit one of two free throws to have Caldwell trail by six. But the Lightning's tough defense and two free throws from Stevens and White gave the Lightning a 77-69 win.

Stevens closed with a season-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Ciszkowski notched 22 points, six 3-pointers and nine rebounds with Abraham adding nine points and seven rebounds for GBC (3-20, 2-9 CACC).

Lewis finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Coogan had 10 points and six rebounds, and Amyah Bray had 14 points and nine rebounds for Caldwell (6-15, 2-9).

Goldey-Beacom hosts Georgian Court on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. This is as part of a doubleheader with the men's side, who play at 8:00 pm in Wilmington, DE.
