Softball Opens 2024 Campaign With Two Impressive Showings at Millersville

The results might not have been what Goldey-Beacom wanted, but the squad began its 2024 season with a pair of hard-fought contests at Millersville and built on the optimism that will surround this team the entire campaign.

GBC was dealt a 2-0 loss in the opener before an 8-4 setback in the finale.

Goldey-Beacom in game one saw an impressive outing from senior transfer Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE), who dazzled with six strikeouts and just one walk over six innings.  McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) was the lone freshman in the lineup and announced her presence with a double to lead off the game in her first collegiate at-bat.

But it was the Marauders who capitalized.  Gabi Turner lined an RBI single in the last of the third inning to open the scoring and Kendra Bumgardner wacked a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Alex Schaefer struck out eight in tossing a five-hit shutout with Gabby D'Ottavio getting two hits for Millersville (2-0).

Game two saw the Lightning (0-2) get their first lead of the season when senior Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) lined an RBI double in the top of the first.  Millersville answered in the fourth when Marli Schreiner got a sacrifice fly and Taylor Campagna smacked a two-run single for a 3-1 lead.

It was time for another Lightning newcomer to shine and the top of the fifth inning provided that drama.  Junior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK), coming off a stellar fall campaign, picked up where she left off with a three-run homer to give GBC a 4-3 cushion.

But Millersville plated three runs of its own in the last of the frame.  D'Ottavio continued her torrid pace with a two-run single to give her side the lead and Hailey Watlington added an RBI single for a 6-4 contest.

Bumgardner scored on an error in the sixth and Watlington drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame for the final.

Davis and junior Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) recorded two hits apiece for the Lightning with junior Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) and sophomore Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) combining for seven strikeouts inside the circle.

D'Ottavio had two hits and three RBI with Angelina Saverase tossing the final 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the victory.

Goldey-Beacom next Saturday hosts Bloomsburg in its home opener, beginning at noon.
