Goldey-Beacom College's Department of Athletics has announced its Leadership Academy has partnered with Las Americas ASPIRA Academy in helping shape and better the lives of the local community.
Â
The Leadership Academy, the College's version of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, already has made a positive impact on the charter school in Newark, DE. Â The academy's student-athletes twice this fall have gone to ASPIRA Academy, reading to children in the first and second grades and helping make a positive impact in their lives.
Â
The Leadership Academy also is raising money to purchase new books, which will be presented when they make a planned return to ASPIRA Academy in the spring. Goldey-Beacom last fall ran a dunk tank during Homecoming & Lightning Family Weekend and will hold 50/50 raffles during basketball games, both of which raised money toward this endeavor.
Â
"I'm very proud of the work being carried out by our SAAC Leadership Academy to do good in our local community," Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit said. Â "Having been to one of the reading sessions and as a father of kids close in age to the Aspira Academy students, it's great to see our student-athletes showing these young kids what being a student-athlete is all about. Â We have great student-athlete role models and these young kids really enjoy the time they get to spend with them."
Â
"It truly is great to see our student-athletes work with these elementary students," Associate Director of Athletics Mike Torres said. Â "I believe that it is just as beneficial for our student-athletes as it is for the ASPIRA students. Â Being able to see the work first hand is truly special."
