Men’s Basketball Hangs On For 87-85 Triumph Over Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom built a 24-point lead early in the second half, but came up with some massive free throws down the stretch for an 87-85 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Wilmington at Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning in the first half were firing on all cylinders, gaining a 51-35 lead by shooting 52 percent from the floor and canning seven 3-pointers.  Sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) continued his stunning play with 18 points and junior Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) added nine.

A 13-3 run early in the second half made it a 64-40 contest with 15:29 left, thanks to five points from senior David Robinson (Philadelphia, PA) and three apiece from McQueen and junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ).

The Wildcats then got things going, using a stunning 28-6 run over the next nine minutes in closing to 70-68 with 6:26 remaining.  Jaylin Horsey poured in 13 points during that stretch with Justin Perez adding six.

A 9-4 run for the Lightning, thanks to four points from freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel. NJ), gave the home side a 79-72 cushion with 3:41 to go.  But the Wildcats poured in the next seven points, including five from Tre Hawkins, for a 79-79 tie with 2:05 left.

Goldey-Beacom (3-6, 1-1 CACC) showed great patience on its next possession and found the big guy.  Robinson got the ball in the low post and made a layup with 1:42 left for an 81-79 margin.

The Wildcats (2-7, 1-1) went for the tie on its next trip, but Manir Waller missed a layup and Marsh grabbed the rebound.  Wilmington elected to play defense and still hope for a one-possession game, but Taylor was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 36 seconds left.

Taylor then came through in a massive way, burying all three free throws for an 84-79 contest.  Hawkins was fouled on the next possession, but only could convert of 1-of-2 for an 84-80 game with 24 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Jalen Robinson (South Orange, NJ) all but iced things by hitting twice from the stripe with 17 seconds to go for an 86-80 margin.

McQueen again was awesome, scoring a career-best 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting with six 3-pointers that also is a personal high.  He has scored in double figures seven times this season and is averaging 16.5 points over his last four contests.

Taylor netted 16 points in going 7-for-7 from the line and David Robinson added 15 for the Lightning, who had a 37-27 edge in rebounding and a 26-10 advantage in second-chance points.

Hawkins scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, Horsey poured in 19 before fouling out with Waller and Perez adding 12 apiece.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday hosts Bowie State, beginning at 6:00 pm.
