Men’s Basketball Handed 87-79 Setback at Molloy

Goldey-Beacom went on a second-half spurt looking to turn the tide, but was dealt an 87-79 loss at Molloy in Rockville Centre, NY.

Goldey-Beacom used a 22-8 run spanning just over five minutes to make things interesting, moving to a 78-68 deficit with 3:10 to go.  Sophomore Zakari McQueen (Petersburg, VA) scored 12 points in that time.

Dylan Kopp's traditional three-point play with 2:48 remaining gave the Lions an 81-68 lead.  Goldey-Beacom then scored the next six points, including a 3-pointer from freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ), in closing to 81-74 with 59 seconds to go.

But Rob Matos hit twice from the line with 43 seconds left for an 83-74 game and Kopp's layup with 29 seconds remaining increased things to an 11-point contest.

McQueen tied his career high with 24 points, Powell scored 18, freshman Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) had eight and 11 rebounds with junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) adding seven and eight for the Lightning (4-8).

Matos netted 23 points, Kopp scored 20 and Bryce Merchant poured in 16 for the Lions (2-8).

The Lightning in the opening half netted seven consecutive points in moving their deficit to 33-28 with 4:14 remaining.  Marsh and Powell each had a layup sandwiched around a 3-pointer from senior Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL).

But the Lions ended things on a 12-2 run for a 45-30 halftime lead.  Merchant netted five points in that spurt, finishing the half with nine on 4-of-5 shooting.

Powell led all players in the first half with 10 points, going 4-of-6 from the field.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is home against Adelphi for a 3:00 pm contest.
