Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defense and Free Throws Pave the Way for Men’s Basketball in 78-68 Victory at Franklin Pierce

Goldey-Beacom set the early tone with its defense and then turned to its home away from home, the free throw line, in recording a 78-68 triumph at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH.

One would think a team which shoots 57 percent (12-of-21) from the floor in the first half would go into the locker room with a solid lead.  But that same Ravens team was forced by the Lightning's defense into 12 turnovers and it was the visitors who owned a 40-31 margin.

Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD) scored 13 points in the half, fellow junior Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) poured in eight and freshman Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) added seven for Goldey-Beacom (4-7), which shot 46 percent (13-of-28) from the floor and 8-for-8 from the foul line.

Franklin Pierce (1-10) looked to make it a game with 6:26 left, when Demariontay Hall dunked one for a 64-60 GBC lead.

The contest would be scoreless for the next two minutes and the next point would be critical.  Taylor provided the next three, canning one from behind the arc with 4:03 to go for a 67-60 score.

Donte Pope made a layup with 3:19 remaining as the Ravens closed to 67-62.  But Powell buried a 3-pointer with 2:52 left and Marsh added a free throw with 1:42 to go for a 71-62 margin.

Powell closed with a season-high 22 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 9-for-11 from the line.  Taylor netted a season-best 20 points, Marsh had 19 and eight rebounds with senior David Robinson (Philadelphia, PA) adding seven and 13.

Marsh now is 10th in team history with 1,115 points.

Goldey-Beacom overall forced 20 turnovers and shot 81 percent (21-for-26) from the line.  It is the sixth time this season the Lightning have shot at least 76 percent from the stripe.

Pope scored 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, Caleb Gatewood netted 15 on 7-of-8 shooting with Ja'Keese Kemp adding 12.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday is at Molloy for a 7:00 pm game in Rockville Centre, NY.
