Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls Late, 70-68, to Millersville

Goldey-Beacom in the third quarter went on an offensive explosion, only to give up a basket with 16 seconds left in a tough 70-68 loss by Millersville at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The third quarter was an enthralling one with Goldey-Beacom outscoring Millersville 24-14, using a stifling press and hi-tempo play to get the team fired up and the home fans going.  Junior Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) scored eight points in that span, shooting 3-of-3 from the floor, and senior Julie Kulesza (Wilmington, DE) netted six in going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.

Another key to the third quarter was senior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE), who was all over the place with four steals that were more of a factor than her five points.  Her play was a huge catalyst in the Marauders committing seven turnovers in the period and Goldey-Beacom shooting 56 percent (9-of-16) from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.

The Lightning looked to be in great shape with 3:49 remaining, when sophomore Katie Yoder (Dublin, PA) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give her side a 63-57 lead.

But Millersville poured in the next nine points, getting a 3-pointer from Kali March with 57 seconds left for a 66-63 lead.

Goldey-Beacom on its next possession went to one of the players who had the squad on the verge of victory as McCarron buried a wide-open 3-pointer with 42 seconds to play for a 66-66 tie.

The Marauders were patient on their next time down the floor and that paid off with Makiah Shaw putting them up for good, nailing a jumper with 16 seconds to go for a 68-66 contest.

The Lightning could not convert a tying layup on the other end and Shaw got the rebound.  GBC (0-4) then had to foul three times to get in the penalty before Sophia Elstone drained two free throws with nine seconds to play for a 70-66 margin.

Ciszkowski netted a season-best 19 points and five 3-pointers, Kulesza poured in 18 points with four 3-pointers, Yoder had 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists with McCarron getting eight points and four steals.

March had 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four 3-pointers and three steals for Millersville (3-1), which shot 59 percent (10-of-17) from the floor in the fourth quarter.  Brenna Ortwein recorded 16 points and seven rebounds, Shawn netted 15 points with Morgan Mahoney adding 10.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday hosts Bowie State at 1:00 pm.
