Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Takes the Pot With Seven-Deuce Suited in 88-83 Victory at Bloomfield

Goldey-Beacom ran its winning streak to four games by getting seven players to score in double figures and record two double-doubles in an 88-83 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Bloomfield in Bloomfield, NJ.

Seven-deuce is considered the worst starting hand in poker, but the Lightning (9-5, 4-0 CACC) were all in toward getting their seventh victory in the last nine outings.  GBC also is off to its best league start since opening 5-0 in 2018-19, one win shy of the school record set in 2009-10.

Goldey-Beacom, maintaining a scoring average over 84 points per game for most of the season, went on another scoring barrage in the first half.  The Lightning used a 17-7 run in just under five minutes to gain their biggest lead of the stanza, 44-29, with 3:41 left.  Senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) scored five points with sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) and junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) adding four apiece.

But the Bears poured in the final 10 points of the half, closing to 44-39.  Marcus Bucknall netted six points in that time and Izaiah Poole ended it with a layup.

Bates scored 10 points in the half with Derry adding eight for the Lightning, who shot 44 percent (17-of-39) from the floor with five 3-pointers.

GBC looked in control owning a 77-66 lead with 7:13 left, but Bloomfield (8-6, 1-3) scored the next eight points in less than a minute for a three-point contest with 6:11 to go.  Edward Ngene had an old-fashioned three-point play and Al Fatir Conner ended it with a 3-pointer.

After the teams traded baskets, sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) canned two free throws with 4:13 remaining for an 81-76 contest.  Fatir Conner went 1-for-2 from the line with 3:51 left for a four-point game before senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) canned a massive 3-pointer from the left corner 29 seconds later, making it 84-77.

Bloomfield stayed in it with 74 seconds left when Fatir Conner hit two free throws for an 84-79 contest.  Starrell Hearns on the Lightning's next possession came up with a steal and a driving layup with 52 seconds to play for an 84-81 game.

But Goldey-Beacom sealed it from the foul line, getting Centeno to hit twice with 42 seconds remaining for an 86-81 contest and Collins to follow suit 15 seconds later for a seven-point margin.

Bates had 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, Centeno netted 14 with Derry notching 13 and six assists.   Marsh had 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, senior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) netted 12 points and Thomas had 11 and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the campaign.

Goldey-Beacom ended shooting 88 percent (15-for-17) from the foul line and 43 percent (32-of-75) from the field.

Fatir Conner was outstanding for the Bears, ending with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go with seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.  Hearns netted 15 points with Deavion Ellis adding 12, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday visits East Stroudsburg, which is ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region and earlier this season was nationally ranked.  Game time is at 7:00 pm.
