Women's Basketball Dealt Heartbreaking 56-55 Loss Against Felician

Goldey-Beacom's tough defense was not enough in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play against Felician as it was dealt a heartbreaking 56-55 loss at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

A slow start from the Lightning gave the visitors a 28-20 lead at the half. Felician's 52-percent shooting kept it ahead despite Goldey-Beacom's defense forcing 11 turnovers.

With 6:33 remaining in the third, a 3-pointer from Mar Vidal lifted Felician to a 37-22 lead. However in the next two and a half minutes, the Lightning brought the deficit to within only a point with 3:37 left after a 14-0 run. Sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) and freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) scored six points apiece in that time and junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) added four.

The fourth quarter provided exciting play with both teams trading baskets for the entirety of the quarter. With 4:48 left, senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) finished a layup to bring the Lightning to trail 47-46.

A six-point lead for Felician following a layup from Ane Valle was cut short by two free throws from senior Zhuri Cannon (Columbia, MD) and a huge three-pointer from Abraham with 1:27 remaining.

The Lightning were down 54-52 when a missed shot from the visitors with 18 seconds left gave the Lightning an extra possession. With 7.1 seconds left, Abraham found an opening on the three-point line and nailed it to give the Lightning a 55-54 lead.

A final timeout from Felician allowed for one more possession in the final seconds. With 3.8 seconds left, Valle found a gap to lay the ball up for a 56-55 win in favor of the visitors.

Despite the loss, the Lightning forced 27 turnovers, capitalizing for 33 points. Stevens led the Lightning with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Ciszkowski and Abraham closed with 11 apiece. White added eight for GBC (2-18, 1-7 CACC).

Valle finished with 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting and Vidal had 12 and six rebounds, with Aisha Traore adding seven and 11 for Felician (6-12, 6-3).

Goldey-Beacom travels to Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday as it faces Holy Family at 6:00 pm as part of a doubleheader with the men, who play at 8:00 pm.
