Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Gains Sole Possession of First Place With an 83-78 Win at Wilmington

In a tightly contested affair with first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division on the line, Goldey-Beacom rose to the challenge and made the big plays when it needed to for an 83-78 win at Wilmington in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half rode the red-hot shooting hand of sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI), the 6-foot 7-inch dynamo who continues to amaze from beyond the arc.  He went 3-of-3 in the half from three-point range that included back-to-back possessions, ending a 14-2 run over 2 1/2 minutes to give the visitors a 32-27 lead with 5:38 left.

The Lightning showed great defense against a dynamic Wildcats offense, holding them without a point over the final two minutes of the half and going into the locker room down just 40-38.  Bates scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) poured in nine and senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) added eight.

Amiri Stewart netted 18 points for Wilmington on 6-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers.

A close game for a majority of the second half swayed toward the Lightning, courtesy of an 8-0 run over two minutes for a 72-66 lead with 4:43 remaining.  Thomas began things with a 3-pointer and Marsh came through with an old-fashioned three-point play.

The Wildcats had to be more aggressive and were, getting to the foul line with Caleb Matthews connecting four times.  The latter two made it 72-70 GBC with 3:45 left.

Thomas as of late has been almost unstoppable and continued that on the next possession, drilling a massive 3-pointer with 3:27 remaining that brought the Lightning's lead to 75-70.

After Wilmington missed a 3-pointer, Goldey-Beacom came down on the other end and got a layup from junior Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) with 2:47 to go for a 77-70 game.

Stewart's dunk with 2:05 remaining made it a 77-72 contest before senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) went 1-for-2 from the line with 90 seconds to go for a six-point game.  Taalib Holloman got a dunk of his own with 1:23 left for a 78-74 score before Marsh hit once from the line with 61 seconds remaining for a 79-74 contest.

The back-and-forth tussle continued with Derry and Marsh each making one from the foul line for an 81-74 contest with 34 seconds remaining.  Stewart converted a quick layup with 22 seconds left to make it a five-point contest.

Goldey-Beacom desperately looked to break Wilmington's press and stay off the foul line.  That happened when Centeno took Marsh's pass and laid it home for an 83-76 game with 13 seconds to go.

Marsh again played great with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and seven rebounds, giving him 18.9 points per game over his last seven contests.  Thomas again was a massive factor, ending with 22 points, six rebounds and five 3-pointers to give him 16.3 points per game over his last four contests.

Derry had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists with Bates adding 11 points for the Lightning, who shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor in the second half for their sixth victory over the last nine games.

Stewart scored 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting with Holloman and Lameen Carter adding 11 apiece for Wilmington, which shot 49 percent (27-of-55) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom (11-8, 6-1 CACC) now owns a one-game cushion over Wilmington (11-7, 5-2) for first in the CACC South Division with Jefferson (5-3) in third place.  The top two teams in each of the two divisions host a quarterfinal in the CACC Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Felician at 3:00 pm.  The women's game between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.
