Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Uses More Red-Hot Shooting in a Thrilling 85-80 Triumph over Felician

Goldey-Beacom shot better than 50 percent from the floor for a seventh time this season and made it three straight wins with an enthralling 85-80 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Felician at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

A 37-37 stalemate at the half preceded a wild first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half that featured eight lead changes and frantic play on both ends.  That last change began a 22-11 run over seven minutes that gave the Lightning a 69-60 lead with 9:12 left, added by six points from senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ).

The Golden Falcons hung around before going on a 10-3 spurt in just over three minutes, closing to 77-76 with 2:58 remaining.  Jabri Fitzpatrick netted four points in that time.

Derry hit twice from the stripe with 2:36 to go for a 79-76 GBC lead and sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) made a layup with 1:56 remaining for a five-point game.

Jaylen Colon's layup with 95 seconds to go brought Felician within 81-78 and Dee-End McRae got a steal to give the visitors a chance to tie.  But Jay'von Jackson stepped out of bounds while catching a pass with 1:05 remaining for a massive turnover.

Marsh followed a missed 3-pointer from senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) and made a layup with 35 seconds to go for an 83-78 contest.  After McRae's layup with 26 seconds left made it a three-point game, GBC committed a turnover that Felician looked to capitalize.

But in a game that featured the teams combining to shoot just under 50 percent from the field, it was a defensive play by the Lightning that proved huge.  Colon drove to the goal looking for a quick basket, but Thomas deflected it for a huge block and the ball went out of bounds off the visitors.

The Golden Falcons then had to foul four times to get in the penalty.  On the seventh team foul, Derry drained both ends of the 1-and-1 with 4.4 seconds left for the final.

Marsh again played great with 18 points and nine rebounds and Derry provided another lift with 16 points, six assists and four rebounds.  Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) netted 15 points, fellow sophomore Omari Banks (Middletown, DE) scored 11 with Thomas adding 10 and seven rebounds.

Colon scored 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting, Fitzpatrick netted 23 with McRae adding 11 and 11 rebounds for the Golden Falcons (9-11, 5-4 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (12-8, 7-1), winners in seven of its last 10, now own a two-game lead over Wilmington (5-3) and Jefferson (5-3) for first place in the CACC South Division.  The top two teams in each of the two divisions host a quarterfinal in the CACC Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday visits Holy Family for an 8:00 pm game.  The women's contest between the same schools precedes it at 6:00 pm.
