Women’s Basketball Handed 62-52 Setback at Bridgeport

Goldey-Beacom once again displayed outstanding grit and determination with its young squad, but was dealt a 62-52 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT.

In many stretches this season, Goldey-Beacom has showed exceptional defense that has proven to be a beacon toward a bright future.  Bridgeport in the second quarter was limited to just 17 percent shooting (3-of-18), part of a half in which it only shot 32 percent (11-of-34) from the field.

Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) and sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) in the first half netted six points apiece with junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) adding five and five rebounds, giving the Lightning a 26-25 halftime cushion.

The Lightning made a great charge in the fourth quarter, netting seven consecutive points and holding the Purple Knights off the scoreboard for more than two minutes.  Stevens scored four points in that time and Ciszkowski netted a 3-pointer for a 47-46 deficit with 4:27 left.

Bridgeport had an answer, using a 7-2 burst in just over two minutes for a 54-48 lead with 1:48 remaining.  Shakira Hester continued her outstanding day with five points, ending the run with an old-fashioned three-point play.

That free throw began a stretch in which the Purple Knights went 9-for-13 from the line to end the contest.  Stephanie McBride was the go to for the home side, connecting on 6-for-10.

Stevens once again had a strong showing in the post, ending with 16 points and seven rebounds over 24 minutes for GBC (1-17, 0-6 CACC).  Ciszkowski had 11 points and six rebounds, Abraham recorded seven and six, freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) continued to be a factor with seven points and junior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) also netted seven.

McBride had 20 points and 11 rebounds despite playing most of the fourth quarter with four fouls.  Hester scored 15 points, Niyah Whitten netted 11 with Tariah Bryant adding 10 for Bridgeport (5-11, 4-2), which won despite shooting just 36 percent (21-of-58) from the field and 3-of-14 from three-point range.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday visits Wilmington for a 6:00 pm contest in Newark.  The men's contest between the same schools follows at 8:00 pm.
