Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Holds On For An 87-79 Triumph at Bridgeport

Goldey-Beacom jumped to a huge lead, received a battle from Bridgeport and then persevered in recording an 87-79 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory in Bridgeport, CT.

Goldey-Beacom had to establish momentum early to get back in the win column and did, exploding on a 32-7 run over 10 minutes to gain a 38-18 lead with 5:10 left in the opening half.  Senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) continued his solid campaign with 11 points in that time and sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) added nine.

That ride continued for the rest of the half and led to GBC owning a 47-28 halftime lead.  Derry netted 15 points, sophomore Zayon Marsh (Maplewood, NJ) scored 13 and Bates added nine to help their side shoot 59 percent (19-of-32) from the field.

The Lightning held a double-digit lead a majority of the second half and overcame the slow pace of play, but the Purple Knights also have a solid program and were not going away.  They went on a 12-4 run in just over four minutes to take a 73-66 lead with 5:51 remaining, thanks to Caleb Jacobs' nine points.

Senior Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) canned two free throws with 5:19 left for a 75-66 GBC cushion before Bridgeport got the next four points.  Samuel DeSouza hit a layup and D'Andre Collins drilled a long two-pointer with his foot on the line, making it 75-70 with 4:29 to go.

Both teams went without a point for over a minute before Goldey-Beacom put the needle in Bridgeport's balloon.  After Thomas missed a 3-pointer, Derry showed great hustle for an offensive rebound and under the rim immediately found senior Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA).  The latter converted the layup, was fouled and finished the old-fashioned three-point play with 3:05 left for a 78-70 contest.

The Purple Knights tried to reinflate on DeSouza's dunk with 1:51 left for an 80-72 contest, but Thomas followed with a 3-pointer to make it an 11-point game with 82 seconds remaining.

Derry had another day, ending with 21 points for the second straight contest and is averaging 16.8 points over his last six games.  He now is in sole possession of sixth place in program history with 1,154 career points.

Marsh stayed on a roll with 21 points, Thomas scored 18 with Bates adding nine and seven rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 53 percent (29-of-55) from the field.

Jacobs was all over the place for the Purple Knights, ending with 21 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists.  Jayden Iturmendi netted 16 points, DeSouza had 14 and 10 rebounds with D'Andre Collins and Tim Dawson adding 10 points apiece.

Goldey-Beacom (10-8, 5-1 CACC) moved into a tie with idle Wilmington (5-1) for first place in the CACC South Division.  These schools meet Tuesday in Newark for the first of their two regular-season encounters, starting at 8:00 pm that follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
