Women's Basketball Shows Tough Play in 73-63 Loss to No. 6 Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom played down to the wire with No. 6 Jefferson, narrowly falling 73-63 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning opened with strong play against a tough Jefferson side, trailing 32-26 at the half. A slow start to the second quarter gave Jefferson the edge at halftime off 14 points from Cassie Murphy, and 12 from Haley Meinel.

Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) opened the third quarter with five quick points for the Lightning to bring them to within four points trailing 34-30. But a mid-quarter 9-2 lifted Jefferson to a 53-41 lead.

Despite a drop in the third quarter, the Lightning exploded for an 11-0 run to begin the fourth quarter to trail by one point, including back-to-back three-pointers for junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ).

As the teams traded baskets, the Lightning attempted to hold on, but the efficient play of Jefferson made it difficult for Goldey-Beacom to break through.

With 2:26 remaining, Meinel nailed a jumper followed closely with a layup from sophomore Gaia Zimbardo (Parma, Italy) for a score of 63-56 in favor of the Rams.

The next 45 seconds saw Jefferson go 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to seal a 73-63 win, despite the Lightning shooting 50 percent from field goal range and 57 percent from three in the final quarter.

Abraham netted a career-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and five three pointers, Zimbardo and junior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) scored 11 points, sophomore Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) added 10, and Stevens notched seven to go with seven rebounds and four assists for GBC (1-16, 0-5 CACC).

Meinel closed with 22 points and six steals, Murphy finished with 22 points and seven rebounds, Sam Yencha had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Morgan Robinson added eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists for Jefferson (16-1, 6-0 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom travels to Bridgeport, CT on Saturday as they continue conference play against Bridgeport at 1:00pm as part of a doubleheader with the men, who tip at 3:00pm.
