Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 80-68 Loss at Queens (NY)

Goldey-Beacom looked to start a new winning streak, but was dealt an 80-68 loss at Queens (NY) in Flushing, NY.

Both teams came into the contest on a torrid pace, seeking to fine tune their games before getting back to league play.  Queens was the one which had the early spurt, using a 21-11 run over 9 1/2 minutes to gain a 29-22 lead with 3:50 left thanks to six points from Eric Tynes.

Despite eight points from Damani Thomas (Kingston, NY) and seven from fellow senior Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ), Goldey-Beacom was in a 35-32 deficit at halftime.  Malik Bentinck scored nine points for the Knights and Jayden Seraphin added eight.

The tenacity continued into the second half with each team looking for an edge.  The Knights found it just past the midway point of the second half, using an 18-7 run in just under seven minutes for a 72-56 cushion with 2:48 left.  Bentinck continued to be a massive presence with seven points and Manny Umoffia added six.

Thomas' electrifying play continued with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting, seven rebounds and four 3-pointers.  He is averaging 14.3 points over his last nine contests, shooting at least 50 percent from the field five times.

Derry poured in 13 points and now has 1,112 career, moving past 2022 GBC Athletics Hall-of-Fame inductee Azeez Ellegood for ninth place in program annals.  Derry also had seven rebounds with sophomore Caleb Bates (Detroit, MI) adding 10 points.

Bentinck was too much with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 13 rebounds for the Knights (9-7), who shot 41 percent (29-of-71) from the field and owned a 59-40 rebounding edge.  Seraphin poured in 15 points, Sunnie Diamond had 14 and 12 rebounds with Shamar Chester adding 11 and nine.

Goldey-Beacom (9-7) is home next Wednesday against Jefferson as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
